Ulster Rugby is one the four professional Irish rugby teams. It is part of IRFU Ulster Branch. They compete in the Heineken Champions Cup as well as the United Rugby Championship. It plays its home games in Belfast at Kingspan Stadium.

Ulster has had its share of success. This is why the province is currently in second place in the Irish conference. But, the club has experienced a decline in the past few seasons. This is not to suggest that there are not signs of improvement in the coming season. It is expected that the province will struggle to qualify for the Champions Cup next summer.

Ulster enjoyed their golden era of 2000s success, winning the Celtic League title in 2005. Also, Ulster won the Heineken Champions Cup 1999 for the first time. They finished first in the Pro12 table 2012, which was their first European competition. The club was runners-up at the Heineken Champions Cup 2011, beating Toulouse and Saracens along the way.

The club finished in second place in Celtic League's 2003-2004 season. Toulouse beat them to the Champions Cup, ending their three-year streak of unbeaten performances in the competition.

The club suffered a slump in fortunes during the 2006-07 seasons. After a defeat of Gloucester 32-14, Mark McCall was forced to resign as head coach. David Humphreys, the club’s director of Rugby, also retired. David Humphreys left the province to take up a similar job at Gloucester.

2009-10 saw a major overhaul in the team's management. Mark McCall, an ex-Ulster captain, was appointed as Alan Solomons' replacement. Assistant coach was appointed to be Jeremy Davidson. A new director of rugby was named, Les Kiss. Dan Tuohy, originally from Exeter, was signed.

The team saw a significant turnaround during the 2010-11 season. Neil Doak was appointed head coach. Ulster won 13 out of 14 of their first 14 games and qualified for the quarterfinals of Heineken Cup. Unfortunately, they were defeated at Twickenham by Leinster.

Despite their poor performance, the Ulster players demonstrated their dedication to the cause. They were led to victory by Justin Harrison (Australian lock) and Isaac Boss (New Zealand-born scrum-half). These two players were awarded Player of the Year. Roger Wilson and John Cooney received the honor. However, the club suffered a serious setback when Nevin Spence, centre of the club, was killed in an accident. Several other players left the club including out-half Ian Humphreys, who went to London Irish, and back row forward Rob Herring.

The club started to make progress after a disappointing 2008-09 season. They won their next five matches, including a 27-16 win against Scarlets. As a result, they reached the semi-finals of the Celtic League.

FAQ

How does the sport of parasailing differ from parachuting?

Para-gliding involves flying above the ground using a harness attached to a small sail. You can fly with the harness. It helps you stay safe as you fall through air.

Flying is easy with no equipment. Simply attach your body to the sail. Then you go off. As you ascend, the wind pushes against your sail. This forces the sail to lift you.

As you glide along the ground, you keep moving forward. You continue to move forward with your momentum until you reach the end. You then release your grip to fall back to the ground.

You can reattach the sail when you are ready to begin again.

Parasailing is a rapidly growing sport. Parasailing attracted more than 1,000,000 participants in 2013. That's almost double the number who did so in 2008.
