Ulster Rugby

rugby position

The Ulster Rugby team is one of four professional provincial rugby clubs in Ireland. It is part IRFU Ulster Branch. The team competes in both the Heineken Champions Cup (United Rugby Championship) and the Ulster Rugby Championship. It plays home matches at Belfast's Kingspan Stadium.

Ulster has had its fair shares of success. The province is currently second at the Irish conference. But, the club has experienced a decline in the past few seasons. This is not to suggest that there are not signs of improvement in the coming season. The province will likely struggle to win the Champions Cup next year.

Ulster had a golden decade in the 2000s. In 2005, they won the Celtic League title. In 1999, Ulster became the first Irish provincial to win Heineken Champions Cup. They also won their first European competition, finishing top of the Pro12 table in 2012. The club finished second in Heineken Champions Cup 2011. They defeated Toulouse and Saracens.

The 2003-2004 season saw the club finish in second place in the Celtic League. Toulouse beat them to the Champions Cup, ending their three-year streak of unbeaten performances in the competition.

The club's fortunes declined in 2006-07. Mark McCall, the head coach, resigned after a loss to Gloucester of 32-14. David Humphreys, the club’s director of Rugby, also retired. After leaving the province, David Humphreys took up a similar role at Gloucester.

In 2009-10, there was a significant change in the management structure. Mark McCall, a former Ulster captain was appointed to replace Alan Solomons. Assistant coach was appointed to be Jeremy Davidson. Les Kiss was appointed as the new director of rugby. Dan Tuohy was signed from Exeter.

The team went through a major turnaround in the 2010-11 season. Neil Doak became the new head coach of the team, replacing Alan Solomons. Ulster won 13 of their first 14 games, and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup. They were defeated by Leinster at Twickenham.

Despite their poor performance, the Ulster players demonstrated their dedication to the cause. They were led to victory by Justin Harrison (Australian lock) and Isaac Boss (New Zealand-born scrum-half). Both of these players were named Player of the Year. Roger Wilson, John Cooney, and Nevin Spence were also honored with the award. But the club suffered a major setback when centre Nevin Spence died in an accident. Other players also left the club, including out-half Ian Humphreys who went to London Irish and Rob Herring, a back row forward.

After a disappointing start to the 2008-09 season, the club began to turn things around. Despite losing to La Rochelle in the opening game of the season they won their next five fixtures, including a victory against Scarlets by 27-16. They made it to the semi-finals at the Celtic League.
