American rugby was a popular sport on many universities campuses in the late nineteenth century. The All Blacks visited the United States on several occasions, and various universities were playing rough-and-ready football-type games. In 1869, Princeton Colleges and Rutgers Colleges hosted the first American game of this type. It was a 25-aside game that was played according to the rules of Rugby Union football.

The All Blacks were touring the United States in 1908 and 1909. Tourists were returning from tours in France and England. The game was called "All-Americans against the All-Blacks" by American media. The tour was a success. Takudzwa Ngwenya won the Try of the Year award.

The University of California and Stanford ceased playing football in 1906 and adopted rugby instead. This was the first time that this type of game was played in America.
