The 2010 Super 14 season started in February and finished on May 29. Each team played a round-robin series against 13 teams, totaling three and half months worth of match play. This year's schedule featured a record number referees. At least eighty percent were referred to by Merit Panel officials.

In terms of performance evaluation, studies utilised various indicators to measure performance, including turnovers, points scored, clean breaks, tackles made, kicks out of hand, and tries. These measures were tested in both defensive and attacking situations. However, the majority of studies focused on only attack-related variables.

According to some studies, winning teams had fewer tackles. This may be related to the rule changes that favoured a defensive team in breakdown situations. Other variables that were considered more important for success were higher average carry meters, lineout success on opposing ball and clean break.

Some studies showed that point scoring is not associated with the outcome of a match. These were however based on data from lower levels competitions and didn't include information on team behaviour or multiple confounding factor. It is difficult, if not impossible, to establish a connection between performance and points scoring.

Another study examined how performance and tackle contests, which measure defence, correlated. This indicated that tackles completed were more likely to be successful for the winner. Although there were some inconclusive studies, these studies identified a positive correlation among points scored and turnovers.

K-modes cluster analysis was used for identifying common patterns in play, such as lines and scrums. These patterns are a result of both the physical constraints of the game and the self-organising interactions between the players.

Pretoria's Bulls have been the most consistent tournament team. They have won 14 consecutive games at home and have not been defeated in the tournament since 2012. Their forwards have speed and are capable of going out wide. Despite their record, however the Bulls haven’t performed to their potential and aren’t the right side to rescue an altitude slump.

While the Hurricanes are tough opponents on their day they have not yet shown their full potential. They will lose in Christchurch. They will have All Blacks centre Conrad Smith at their back and halfback Piriweepu at their side, making it a formidable team.

While the Cheetahs are a solid side on day, they will have to deal with the loss of Heinrich Brussouw, their star forward. They're coached by Juan Smith and have not been as big of a name as the Stormers. Nonetheless, they've been better in recent years, and should beat the Sharks.

While the Waratahs may be a solid side on any given day, they're hoping for a win with an extra point. This should guarantee a place at the semi-finals.
